Spacetime Gothic closing

Closing event for Spacetime Gothic

Sunday, November 1st, 4–7pm
Artist talk at 5pm, followed by a black hole-making workshop
Steve Gilbert Studio, 1418 Broadway, Seattle

Hey everybody, let’s do astrophysics the hedgewitch way, as Katharina Kepler intended. This might be a spell. Girls own the void and you can too! Suitable for reasonable children and most adults.

Join me for the closing of Spacetime Gothic, my solo exhibition imagining a world of science drenched in animism, where the universe was never stripped of spirit and matter never became entirely mute.

Part artist talk, part workshop, this event moves between bogs and black holes, radios and daemons, computation and cosmology, asking what kinds of technologies might emerge from a cosmos understood as alive, relational, and perhaps a little haunted.

What do bogs and black holes have in common? Both are voids that hold memory. Anything that falls into a black hole may disappear beyond its event horizon, but its information is understood to remain encoded at the boundary. A bog offers another kind of archive. In the oxygen-deprived darkness of peat, decay slows, bones dissolve, and bodies and traces of ancient lives can emerge centuries later, returned from an underworld.

Spacetime Gothic brings these radically different scales of disappearance and preservation into conversation. Through handwritten archives, logic, electricity, ferrofluid, kelp, wax, copper, and code, the exhibition asks what happens when we approach technology not simply as a means of measuring, controlling, and extracting from the world, but as a way of entering into relation with it.

At 5pm, I’ll give an artist talk exploring the ideas behind the exhibition: speculative cosmotechnics, witchcraft, animism, and the possibility of technological futures that never separated spirit from matter. What if electricity, computation, and robotics had developed before disenchantment? What if the witches, rather than the alchemists, had an Enlightenment first?

After the talk, we’ll wrap up by making tiny black holes to take home. Think of it as astrophysics the hedgewitch way: a little cosmology, a little material magic, and a small, portable void of your very own.

No need to RSVP. All materials provided. Just bring a jar! Small jars, about baby-food size, are ideal. A few jars will be available if you can’t find one.

Come spend the afternoon with us as Spacetime Gothic comes to a close.
